Canadian Startup Success Story: Rami Alhamad and PUSH – BML Health Medtech 5 à 7 event for Digital Health Startups

BML Health in collaboration with our co-hosts Health Technology Catalyst | CTS and Startup in Residence was excited to welcome Rami Alhamad on July 16th, 2024 at the Hotel Nelligan in Old Montreal, as part of our Montreal Medtech 5 a 7 Series for MedTech and Digital Health Startups to share his amazing experience from founding PUSH to being acquired by wearables giant Whoop in September 2021.

The discussion centered on the story of PUSH, the Canadian Sport Science Company founded by Rami that was purchased by Whoop in 2021. Rami Alhamad, Founder, Startup Advisor and Entrepreneur in Residence at Menlo Ventures, shared his story and went deep into the bumps and bruises required to run a successful startup and provided useful advice on founding, financing, managing, pivoting, decision making, growing and exiting a Canadian health and fitness wearables startup. The discussion was moderated by our own Founder and Managing Director, Marc Saab.

We have been talking about the challenges faced by Canadian startups in medtech and hardtech in our Medtech 5 à 7 Series. On this occasion we are happy to bring to light a major success story, one that was built without shortcuts, only with dedication, hard work, strategy and a little luck.

Rami had useful and actionable insights for the entrepreneurs in the room, some highlights include:

🎯 Know your value and stay true to it – as a company and as an individual.
🎯 Solve a real problem, and build a meaningful mission that is easy to describe and will get people excited.
🎯 It is almost never only about the tech – it is about content and an application that lead to adoption.
🎯 Bring people on board – investors, partners, advisors, staff – who share the vision and passion and will grind through the tough moments with you.
🎯 Finding a great mentor is part of the secret sauce. Not easy but worth it.
🎯 Be ruthless with focus and narrowing it, not expanding it. Beware of shiny objects.
🎯 Seek to create competitive auction dynamics when fundraising and moving the business forward.
🎯 Be attentive to corporate development discussions that may distract from your true objective.
🎯 Discussions with strategic technical executives at complementary firms, savvy business development and marketplace traction are the types of real world activities that can lead to successful exits.
🎯 And so much more.

We look forward to seeing you at the next one!
